Chapter 10

Two days have passed since Romulus visited the twins in the Cape Town apartment. Two days since he righted the genetic wrong that the Universe has imposed on a selected few. He was sure she would not realize it right away, mired in sadness for the departure of her sister, but as her strength, senses, clarity of mind and endurance more than doubled in the coming weeks the firstborn twin Bernice would realize what a gift he has given her and would surely fall down on her knees in praise towards him if she ever saw him again.

That would not happen though, as Romulus never visited the firstborn. They were as much an unknowing victim of circumstance as he was. Victims of a cruel joke played upon them and roughly two percent of the world’s population by the Cosmic powers that be. Romulus saw this now more clearly every day. Every time he proceeded to spill the lifeblood of the second born on the floor, releasing the energy that they have unrightfully taken, he always took the liberty of consuming at least one teaspoon to strengthen him and prompt his eventual ascension into Demigod status.

And it worked too, not only has he given the precious gift of life to the first-born, but with each consumption he felt his own power grow more and more as he absorbed the essence of his victims. It would not be long until he had the strength to significantly step up his game to a new level. Then they will suffer as never before, the sixty million odd second born twins that are yet to feel his wrath.

Romulus now looked at the photos he took of Brenda and Bernice on a happier day. He could see the tired circles under Bernice’s eyes from that day and knows that they are now filled with strength because of his actions. Romulus wonders to himself if he should not break his own rule to visit her and maybe give her the opportunity to show thanks to him in whichever way pleases her.

But no, the ejaculation of those bodily fluids would work against his cause as this act would again significantly weaken him. And he will never be weak again.

Never. Never. Never. Never.

Romulus was weak once.

Forty years ago on a Karoo farmhouse, Romulus was born to a frail woman by the name of Elizabeth Somerville. He was born first and his identical brother or monozygotic twin was born five minutes later.

Their mother who was a fan of classic literature called them Romulus and Remus after the famous twins who was said to be the sons of the God of War Mars and who found the city of Rome. The legend also says that they were raised by wolves and that Romulus eventually killed Remus, and this is why the city is called Rome – after the older twin.

Growing up Romulus Somerville did not feel like a demigod at all, quite the opposite. His mother explained to him time and time again while she tended to him on his sick bed that he and his brother had a complication while they were being carried to term which was called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

In simple terms, the brothers shared a placenta in the womb and blood was diverted into Remus that should rightfully have been Romulus’. Sweet, sweet blood. The source of all life. His brother stole this from him on a daily basis and this left Romulus a frail and sickly child while Remus was strong as an ox from birth and could run and play outside whenever it pleased him.

Romulus also suspected that mother secretly favoured her healthy son as he could do chores and help her with the cooking, while he, Romulus was just a burden. Every day he asked this of his mother, but she just smiled and duly wiped his sweated brow with a wet cloth while she brought him tea, never giving him satisfaction of answering his enquiries.

Their thirteenth birthday were one of those rare days where Romulus felt well and mother surprised him and his brother with a cake and some Swiss army knives as presents. After they had their fill of birthday food, the two brothers proceeded to play outside by the farm dam.

Remus was dutifully carving a piece of wood he found into a potential present for their mother, while Romulus was scrounging around in the long grass on the lookout for something. After an hour has passed, Remus got bored and decided he wanted to have a look at what his brother was up to. What he saw upset him greatly.

Romulus was crouched over the dead bodies of six field mice. Their throats slit and their blood pouring out freely in the pale Karoo sand. Romulus dutifully picked one up and then proceeded to drink its blood straight from the neck. Remus let out a gasp of air in shock. This awakened Romulus from his trance-like state and he got up and turned around to face his brother for what he knew was the last time. His face was smeared with blood and his expression was blank.

Remus barely had time to say anything before the knife was stuck in his throat.

On that sunny day by the dam Romulus proceeded to take back everything his brother stole from him – down to the last drop.

He never felt so alive.
